The quality of new vehicles is declining according to J.D. Power’s 2023 Initial Quality Study. “The automotive industry is facing a wide range of quality problems, a phenomenon not seen in the 37-year history of the IQS,” said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power. ”
J.D. Power surveyed more than 93,000 vehicle owners and leasers for this study and found that the main cause for the decline in quality was attributed to defective technology such as faulty features, displays and infotainment systems.
The most common issues reported included:
• Doors not opening properly for electric vehicles.
• Faulty Android Automotive Operating System.
• Malfunctioning safety features such as forward collision warning, lane keeping assistance, lane departure warning and blind spot warning.
• Smartphones not charging fully, overheating.
The 10 highest ranked brands in 2023 were Dodge, Ram, Alfa Romeo, Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Porsche, Cadillac, Kia, and Lexus. The model with the highest quality was the Nissan Maxima. The Kia Rio, Toyota Camry, Audi A3, Kia Stinger, Kia Forte, Chevy Camaro, Corvette, Lexus IS, Mini Cooper, BMW 8 Series and Genesis G80 also won accolades in their car segments.
Electric brands such as Tesla, Polestar, Lucid Motors and Rivian Motors were ranked at the bottom, based on smaller samples of surveys.
