The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) is investigating a defect in Jeep Cherokee vehicles where water leaks corrode brake modules leading to brake failure.
NHTSA has received more than 80 complaints from Cherokee drivers stating that their vehicles randomly activated brakes while on the road or failed to start while parked.
The models affected by this defect include 2018 – 2020 Jeep Cherokees. Cherokee owners are urged to take the issue very seriously, and they should particularly look out for water leaks under the vehicle, under the hood, and for potential engine overheating. If any issues are noticed, consumers should bring their vehicle immediately to their Jeep technician to get it checked.
While a class action regarding this problem was filed in 2022 against Stellantis N.V. which owns Jeep, NHTSA hasn’t offered any resolution or issued any recall yet.
