General Motors is the manufacturer with the most lemon law cases per vehicle sold in California according to a report from the California Public Interest Research Group.
With one lemon case for every 78 vehicles sold, GM leads the list of the most sued automakers, followed by Jaguar Land Rover, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Nissan, and Ford Motor Company. On the other hand, Toyota is once again the manufacturer with the fewest lemon lawsuits, with only 1 case for every 2029 vehicles sold.
According to the data collected between 2018 and 2021, the number of lemon law cases filed in court represented only 0.45% of the 7 million vehicles registered in California around that time.
The California lemon law was designed to protect consumers by requiring car companies to repurchase or replace vehicles that suffer from warranty defects that cannot be fixed in a reasonable number of attempts – usually as few as 2 attempts.
