A revealing article was published today in the Detroit Free Press where Ford insiders spilled the story on what we all know to be true about Ford Focus and Fiesta vehicles – they are lemons and Ford concealed the defects and safety risks knowing that doing so could harm consumers. Ford insiders even admit, “I wouldn’t put my kid in one of those cars.”
During development, thermal testing showed the transmissions’ limits, and Ford began working on software in an attempt to mitigate the problems. At the root of the problem was Ford’s decision to use dry clutch technology for the transmission. The guts of a dual-clutch transmission are more like a manual than a conventional automatic transmission, but the driver does not have to shift gears. These transmissions can improve fuel economy and weigh less than a conventional automatic — and also are less expensive to build.
California consumers who have bought or leased 2011 – 2016 Ford Focus and Fiesta vehicles, and newer model years as well, are currently protected by California’s lemon law after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found that a class-action settlement was manifestly unfair to consumers. It is unclear what may or may not happen.
