Here are the top 10 worst car brands of 2024, based on Consumer Reports’ annual survey of over 330,000 vehicles from 2000 to 2024. The survey covers 20 areas including engine, transmission, electrical and infotainment systems to calculate its reliability rating.
There were quite a few major changes compared to last year’s ranking. Cadillac, Chevy, Nissan, RAM and Tesla dropped out of the top 10 while electric automaker Rivian made its entry straight in the top 3. Meanwhile, repeat offenders such as Mercedes-Benz, Jeep, Volvo, Ford, GMC and Dodge didn’t fail to disappoint, with Chrysler taking the least coveted prize this year.
10. DODGE
reliability rating: 42
The American brand’s least reliable model was the Dodge Durango but other models also fared poorly.
9. FORD
reliability rating: 40
Ford’s rating remains pretty low, mostly due to its F-150 truck and Edge SUV underperforming.
8. LINCOLN
reliability rating: 38
Once again, the Aviator and Corsair vehicles proved to be lackluster.
7. GMC
reliability rating: 36
Unsurprisingly, the popular Sierra truck is still GMC’s most problematic truck.
6. VOLVO
reliability rating: 28
Several Volvo models are dragging the Swedish manufacturer down, most particularly the XC60 and XC90.
5. JEEP
reliability rating: 26
Plagued by many defects and class actions, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an unrepenting lemon.
4. VOLKSWAGEN
reliability rating: 26
All VW vehicles scored lower than 35, which isn’t good news for the German automaker.
3. RIVIAN
reliability rating: 24
With only 2 vehicles, the new electric manufacturer failed to make a great first impression but certainly has room to grow.
2. MERCEDES-BENZ
reliability rating: 23
Once synonym with quality, the luxury German car company and last year’s worst car brand scored low across the board, struggling to improve its image.
1. CHRYSLER
reliability rating: 18
Most Chrysler vehicles underperformed but the Pacifica Hybrid was the biggest failure with a reliability score of just 14.
